Birding in the Land of the Midnight Sun

Birding in the Land of the Midnight Sun

Finland & Norway — Spring 2018 (19 May – 2 June)

Map of journey with markers where photos taken.

Finland is a land of over 180,000 lakes as well as endless birch and pine forest.

Norway is a land of fjords and mountains.

We travelled as far north as it is possible to go on the European mainland to visit Norway’s unspoiled Varanger peninsula on the edge of the Barents Sea.

We were a small group of only six guests traveling with BirdwatchingTrips with The Biggest Twitch. Our guides, Ruth and Alan, were very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable as well as great fun.  During our time in Finland, we also had Tuomas, with us.  He was a brilliant guide and very good at finding the birds we wanted to see. He never gave up on a search for a bird.

As well as seeing lots of new species, it was also wonderful to see more familiar species in their breeding plumage.

Here is a list of the places we stayed with links to posts with photos from each area.

  1. Messilä (near Lahti)
  2. Oulu
  3. Kuusamo
  4. Ivalo
  5. Vadsø
  6. Båtsfjord
  7. Ivalo
